JC Lee is a Norfolk County/Hamilton, Ontario artist creating contemporary textured artworks inspired by landscapes, nature and the human experience!
His passion for art started during his childhood in Malaysia where he learned the basics of painting using watercolour. After a long hiatus from painting as other life pursuits including moving to Canada became a priority, JC's passion for art was rekindled by the beauty of the varied landscapes and wildlife in Norfolk County, Ontario while vacationing in Turkey Point. He now splits his creative time between his Turkey Point cottage and Hamilton home, where he lives with his husband and two dogs.

JC began pursuing his professional artistic career in 2010, switching to an oil medium and gradually adding mixed media to his repertoire using self-taught techniques. He most recently started incorporating 3D relief into his artworks. His artworks have a distinct style, featuring a combination of textures and 3D relief using a variety of mixed media such as molding paste, paint brush fibres and sand. His signature style is the blending of mica powder with richly coloured oil paints to bring his artworks to life with an added shimmer best seen in person.

Artist Statement

I draw inspiration from the world around me, weaving my personal experiences and emotions into the narratives of my artwork.

My pieces merge magical realism, surrealism, and abstraction, presenting real-world subjects alongside fantastical, surreal, and abstract elements. My creations often feature a highly textured or sculpted 3D relief foreground and feature a range of subjects from landscapes to human figures. I add compositional interest through the juxtaposition of perspectives, sheen, textures, symbols, patterns and play of light.

Being a self-taught artist, my art process is both experimental and intuitive, continually pushing me to explore new media to achieve unique effects and textures.
