Dances with Cranes Series

This mixed media relief series presents a dialogue among human dance, cultural artifacts and symbols across time, juxtaposed with the natural world through the cross-cultural symbolism of dancing cranes.

Reverie of the Harvest Moon

Reverie of the Harvest Moon
秋月之梦

September 25th marks the arrival of the 2026 Harvest Moon and the celebration of the Chinese Moon Festival.

Inspired by my Chinese heritage, the timeless story of the moon goddess separated from her beloved, and the graceful Chinese fan dance, I created this textured mixed media painting as a dreamlike vision. Dancing cranes move through a silhouetted landscape reminiscent of traditional Chinese art, illuminated by the Harvest Moon and viewed through the folds of a red silk fan. This piece is a reverie on love, longing and what we leave behind.

Dances with Cranes: Wasted Frequencies

One kind of love glitches out: 80s fashion and trends (extra large shoulder pads, neon colours, big hair, 80s music...); 80s technology (boomboxes, stereos, cassettes, synthesizers, brick phones, clunky PCs...). Everything we swore we had to have in the 80s, now ugly junk and scrap. The other kind is forever, two cranes dancing and eternally in love.

The Flamenco Duende

The Flamenco Duende

This piece is inspired by duende, the soul of flamenco.
A force that rises from somewhere unseen, where passion, pain, rhythm, and spirit become one. Duende is the moment emotion overtakes the dancer - raw, untamed, and impossible to replicate. This next entry in the Dances with Cranes series is an attempt to capture that fleeting intensity. 🔥

Has the red flamenco dress been wastefully discarded or is it the duende?

First Position

Cranes are "birds of happiness" in many Asian cultures. May these cranes bring us much needed happiness through dances starting with ballet's first position!
